What is Hot Wax Dipping?

Hot wax dipping involves immersing various beehive components or parts into molten wax. Despite the term “dip” implying a brief immersion into a liquid, apiarists typically submerge hive parts in molten wax for periods of up to 15 minutes, depending on the specific purpose of the dipping process.

Purpose of Dipping Hive Components

Apiarists employ hot wax dipping for two primary reasons:

1. Preservation: The process preserves wooden hive parts, shielding them from the detrimental effects of weather, fungi, and other causes of decay. By forming a protective layer around the components, microcrystalline wax helps extend their lifespan and ensures their structural integrity over time.
2. Sterilization: Another crucial purpose of hot wax dipping is to sterilize hive parts salvaged from hives infected with the honey bee brood disease known as American foulbrood. By subjecting these components to the high temperatures of the molten wax, harmful pathogens and bacteria are effectively eliminated, preventing the spread of the disease and ensuring the safety of the bee colony.
