Aluen CAP is a slow-release oxalic acid strip treatment designed for controlling Varroa destructor in honey bee colonies
What it is & how it works
- Active ingredient: Oxalic acid dihydrate
- Each strip contains ~10 g oxalic acid in a slow-release matrix
- Works via contact transfer as bees walk over strips and distribute it
- Duration: ~42 days continuous release
👉 Unlike dribble or vaporisation, it keeps working across multiple brood cycles, catching mites as they emerge.
Dosage & placement
Standard Australian permit directions:
- 8–10 frame hive: 4 strips
- 5–6 frame nuc: 2 strips
Placement:
- Lay strips across top bars of brood frames (e.g. frames 2, 4, 6, 8)
- Must be in the active brood area
Duration:
- Leave in hive 42 days, then remove and discard
- ❗ Use only once per year
- ❗ Do NOT use in consecutive treatment periods
🍯 Honey & residue
- 0-day withholding after strip removal
- Leaves no detectable residues in honey/wax when used correctly
👉 Big advantage vs amitraz strips.
- Works with brood present (major advantage in Australia)
- Continuous exposure improves mite knockdown over time
- Organic acid → low resistance risk
- Simple: one install + one removal
⚠️ Safety
- Oxalic acid is corrosive/irritant
- Wear:
- Gloves
- Eye protection
- Protective clothing
- Discard unused strips within 24 hours of opening
