Formic Pro is a Varroa mite treatment that uses formic acid vapor to control Varroa destructor in honey bee colonies.
This organic acid is specially formulated to control the three parasitic mites of economic significance to the honey bee: Varroa Destructor, Tracheal and Tropilaelaps
Formic Pro is different from strips like Apivar or Bayvarol:
1. Vapor action
- The pads release formic acid fumes inside the hive
- These vapors spread through the entire colony
2. Kills mites on bees and in brood
- Vapors penetrate capped brood cells
- This means it kills:
- mites on adult bees (phoretic mites)
- mites reproducing inside brood cells (a major advantage)
3. Disrupts mite respiration
- Formic acid interferes with the mite’s cellular respiration, leading to death
👉 This makes Formic Pro one of the few treatments that targets all life stages of the mite.
Key features
- Works through vapour, not just contact
- Penetrates capped brood (big advantage)
- Can be used with honey supers on (in many regions—check local label)
- Fast-acting compared to some other treatments
- Leaves minimal residue when used properly
Standard application (2-strip method)
- Open hive and locate brood chamber
- Place 2 strips flat across the top bars of brood frames
- Space them evenly across the brood area
- Close the hive
- Leave in place for 14 days
- Do not disturb during treatment
Alternative (1-strip method)
- Use 1 strip at a time, replaced after ~10 days
- Gentler on colonies in hot weather or weaker hives
⚠️ Important precautions
- Ensure good hive ventilation
- Expect some temporary bee mortality (normal if moderate)
- Possible queen interruption in laying during treatment
- Always follow label directions specific to your country
- Wear protective gloves (formic acid is corrosive)
