Description
Bee fondant is a soft, pliable sugar feed made from refined sugar and water, cooked and set into a smooth, dough-like or solid slab. It’s designed as an emergency or supplemental carbohydrate source for honey bee colonies.
Unlike liquid syrup, fondant is:
- Low in moisture
- Slow to spoil
- Easy for bees to consume without needing to evaporate water
1. ❄️ Winter feeding (most important use)
Fondant is ideal in cold conditions because:
- Bees can eat it without leaving the cluster
- No excess moisture is introduced into the hive
- It doesn’t ferment like syrup
? Placed directly above the cluster for easy access.
2. ? Emergency feeding (starvation prevention)
Used when colonies are at risk of running out of stores:
- Late winter / early spring
- During unexpected dearths
Fondant acts as a quick safety net.
3. ?️ Feeding when syrup isn’t suitable
Fondant is preferred over syrup when:
- Weather is too cold for liquid feeding
- High humidity could cause syrup spoilage
- You want to avoid stimulating brood rearing too early

- Helps small or newly split colonies maintain energy
