A beekeeping treatment used to control Varroa destructor mites—one of the most serious parasites affecting honey bee colonies.
Acting as a slow-release pest control system inside the hive—the bees unknowingly act as carriers, spreading the treatment to kill mites throughout the colony
What they contain
- Active ingredient: flumethrin (a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide)
- Each strip typically contains about 3.6 mg of flumethrin
How they work
- The strips are hung inside the hive, usually in the brood chamber.
- Bees walk over them and pick up the chemical.
- The bees then spread the active ingredient throughout the colony, exposing mites.
- The chemical attacks the mite’s nervous system, killing it.
Key features
- Highly effective – can reduce mite levels by up to ~99% in one treatment
- Slow-release action – works over about 6–8 weeks
- Easy to use – hang strips between frames
- Bee-safe (when used correctly) – low toxicity to bees but lethal to mites
- Treats multiple mite generations during the application period
Typical usage
- 4 strips per brood box (standard hive)
- 2 strips for smaller colonies (nucs)
- Leave in hive for 6–8 weeks, then remove
⚠️ Important notes
- Do not reuse strips
- Avoid use during honey flow/harvest periods
- Rotate with other treatments to prevent mite resistance
